First of all, shout out to Elise and Helen who are helping me figure out days of the week. IT’S HARD.
Second- I LEFT MY HOUSE! I slept in a different place! In a different town! Wonder of wonders miracle of miracles! This post-vax life thing is incredible. My friend Helen, she of the days of the week, and I went to Palm Springs and the whole thing felt joyful and amazing. Not being on my couch is almost as great as being on my couch because I want to not because I have to. Also Palm Springs is still the best. Also, Barstow is interesting AF. We went to the first ever Del Taco! I’m not from California and I will never understand why people like Del Taco but it was there so we went and we met the owner who was the nicest 200-year-old man ever and was working the drive through. He was very proud of owning the first ever Del Taco and he should be. It was great. Please go the next time you’re in Barstow.
Other reasons to visit Barstow- an excellent train museum, an extremely touristy but possibly still worth the $8 per person “ghost town”, and the real-life Cars experience. If you don’t know what I am talking about please get your life together and watch the best animated car movie ever. Barstow is one of the many cities that was a hoppin’ tourist town when Route 66 was the main drag and then died almost immediately when the highway was built. It never recovered. But they have the first Del Taco and nice people and very cool motels built back when Route 66 was still a thing so I recommend stopping through on your way to Joshua Tree.
This week I had the deep and intense pleasure of standing up for myself, one of my favorite things to do, and the rare and surprising joy of someone else publicly standing up for me, which almost never happens and is a mythical thing that black women talk about in whispers, along with unicorns and blown out hair that you can get wet. What a delight.
Speaking of delights, the most delightful person I know, who is also the bravest and smartest person I know, Lila Nordstrom, has a real life official book cover for her incredible book that I read in one day and it is GORGEOUS. Behold the stunning beauty that is the cover of Some Kids Left Behind and then preorder it.
In other delightful book news, my other friend with a book, Rob Carpenter, (if you are my friend and you do not have a book please call me and we will work through this crisis together) has pulled off an incredible feat and HIS BOOK 48 LAWS OF HAPPINESS WILL BE IN TARGET LIKE THE TARGET LIKE TARJAY BOUTIQUES LIKE THE GREATEST STORE KNOWN TO MANKIND AFTER SEPHORA. So if you haven’t already ordered his book online please do so and then go to Target and buy one for a friend or your mom and another person who needs to be happy.
