Get in girls, we're moving (to Substack)
Hello, my name is Kat, and I am on TikTok.
No really, I’m a Tokker now. I think that’s what we’re called. Why am I a Tokker? A Youth told me to do it. And also I’m not on Twitter anymore BUT I STILL HAVE THOUGHTS. I refuse to dance so my views will be limited to the few people on TikTok who are interested in 60 second hot takes about the days’ news. If this is you, follow me @katcalvinla. I make no promises to be entertaining. Follow at your own risk.
We all need to be on Reddit more. People are out here making tens of dollars while giving the finger to capitalism AND I WANT IN. First of all, GameStop is wonderful. They recently closed my favorite one on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica and I am still very upset. Can you buy games online? Yes. Is it as satisfying as taking a trip back to the 90s and spending $65 on a tiny cartridge that you’ll probably lose? No. Is it extremely satisfying to watch a bunch of Reddit bros take down hedge fund bros in the name of gamers and broke people everywhere? Yes. This is the kind of content I want from 2021.
Kinds of content I do not want from 2021: seniors standing in long lines in the cold to get COVID vaccines. This is cruel and unusual. The biggest surprise of this pandemic has been how many people clearly hate their grandparents. I estimate that approximately 5% of grandparents deserve to be shunned. The rest are cuddly old people who have loud opinions about politics and make/buy you cookies and definitely did something awesome during a war. Why does everyone want them dead? It took a herculean effort and a small amount of subterfuge to get my 90-year-old grandmother a vaccine but we did it, because she is the greatest person who ever lived. I would be very upset if someone killed my grandmother with their gross virusey breath and I threatened SEVERAL lives to ensure her safety. So I’m not very well going to go around murdering other people’s grandparents. And yet everyone from 20-something fitfluencers to THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT and apparently the entire state of California want our grandparents to die. Watch out grandma. If this doesn’t work, they’re bringing out the ice floes.
Where is my stimmy?
Sundance starts today, it is virtual, it is mildly affordable, I highly recommend that you buy a ticket and support Robert Redford. He needs us.
Project ID Action Fund has announced our first endorsement of 2021, and our first dude, which I guess I’m okay with as long as it doesn’t become a habit. Jay Jones is running for AG of Virginia and they really need him. Bonus: unlike the Governor of Virginia, Jay has never done blackface or tried to Moonwalk during a press conference about how he did blackface.
Watch:
Lupin (Netflix): And then buy the books and start a Lupin book club with me. What other great characters are the French hiding from us? Rude.
Absolutely Fabulous (Hulu): It’s cold, even in LA, it’s the end of a long month, and things are pretty much still terrible. You need a little Patsy and Eddie in your life.
One Night in Miami (Prime): Beautiful, intense, wonderfully directed, honestly performed.
Listen:
On The Media: Did Lulz Break Wall Street? (Podcast): So you can understand what all of this GameStop talk is about.
Power: The Maxwells (Podcast): I knew very little about Ghislaine Maxwell and had never heard of her father and oh boy, at least she comes by it honestly.
Downtown- Macklemore (Spotify): This song is hilarious. I want a moped.
