I got number 2! Now the countdown to Cinco de Mayo and my impending freedom begins! This whole massive global vaccination thing really is a miracle, even if it’s going terribly. Every once in a while we are still capable of achieving greatness. For some people. In some places. Sometimes.
Luckily, now that I’m vaxxed I have scheduled the rest of the day to be “sick” aka catch up on Oscar movies while hopefully not actually getting sick. Here are my recs so far:
Nomadland- It’s perfect and Zhao is going to continue to win all the things.
Minari- I’m watching it today but so far have only heard incredible things.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom- I don’t want to watch this because if I never watch Chadwick Boseman’s last movie then he never had a last movie but I’m watching it today and I am prepared to be both delighted and devastated.
The Mole Agent- OLD MAN DETECTIVE INFILTRATES NURSING HOME but it’s lovely and wonderful and everyone is kind and amazing. Obviously this is not set in America.
Quo Vadis, Aida?- Oof. First of all, I know literally nothing about the war in Bosnia. Second of all, even if you know everything about it this movie will still punch you in the gut and keep punching. A must watch.
My Octopus Teacher- Octopi are amazing.
Mank- Gary Oldman. That’s it. That’s the tweet.
The Trial of the Chicago 7- You think you love Abbie Hoffman but wait until you watch Sacha Baron Cohen playing Abbie Hoffman and then you’ll find out how much you really love Abbie Hoffman.
One Night in Miami- It’s so good, and not just because all of the men in it are beautiful.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm- I assume you have already seen this because you are alive but if you have not get your life together. It’s on Amazon Prime. What are you even doing right now.
I haven’t seen Shaun The Sheep: Farmaggedon but it’s a Shaun The Sheep movie and it’s called Farmaggedon so it’s already the movie of the year.
Soul- I mean… just do a double feature of this and Inside Out and your therapy is done for the year.
Onward- You know what? This was cute.
The White Tiger- Haven’t watched the movie but the book is fantastic. Which is why I haven’t watched the movie.
Collective- The only movie on Earth that will make you feel somewhat okay about the American healthcare system.
Crip Camp- SO GOOD!
Time- I’m watching it now actually. I waited a really long time for this because I feel like it’s going to be depressing AF (I really try to avoid movies about the criminal justice system, I get enough of that BEING ALIVE IN THE WORLD). But I’m just a few minutes in and I would already die for this woman.
Should you watch the Oscars? Probably not, it’s going to be terrible. But Chloe Zhao is going to break a lot of records and Frances McDormand will be there so it’s worth it just for that. But even if you don’t watch the show, watch these movies.
Speaking of movies, has anyone ever heard of the movie Chess? No? Me either. But our local oldies station always plays One Night in Bangkok and I have been going mad trying to figure out what the hell is going on in this song so I finally googled and… wow. It’s no Queen’s Gambit I can tell you that. This video is a delight and I must find this film immediately.
Watch:
I literally just gave you a list of like 20 movies.
Read:
WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL DATING??? (h/t Esther)
Bourdain World Travel (book)- Bourdain’s family and friends put together an anthology of his travel recommendations. Yes, I preordered it. Yes, it arrived yesterday. Yes, I am using it to plan all of my travels for the rest of my life.
Road Food (book)- Obviously all of my reading is centered around my many, many upcoming post-vax vacays. I have two road trips planned over the next month and will be using this book for both.
Listen:
Reveal (podcast): The Center for Investigative Reporting’s podcast is always incredible and usually depressing.
The Daily- The Agony of Pandemic Parenting (podcast): I’m not a fan of The Daily but this podcast will either confirm that your decision not to have children was the right one or you’ll possibly recognize yourself in these horrifying tales of parenting during the pandemic. I had nightmares.
