This week the weather was in the 80s for the first time and I, for one, could not be more thrilled. Only five months until monsoon season! But seriously, whatever the weather is where you are, it’s a great time to start planning your summer projects. Summer is a great time to accomplish something: whether it’s a DIY house project, a personal fitness goal, or a big craft you’ve been thinking about. Whether you do it to be sure you spend more time outside, to reach a goal you’ve always wanted to, or to feel like you have some small amount of control in this world on fire. And late spring is a perfect time to plan! So let’s get started. Here are some ideas:
Start a garden- whether you do it in your backyard or your kitchen windowsill, you can grow a thing! Start with something small like your favorite herbs or tomatoes or hot peppers, visit a local nursery to get excited about the options and find some cute little seedlings, buy a beginning gardening book and if you’re really feeling creative, buy some inexpensive plastic or terra cotta pots and paint them!
Set a fitness goal- Want to run a marathon, or my personal sweet spot, the halfie? Maybe you’ve always wanted to ride a horse, learn archery (can’t recommend it enough), or train for an epic hiking event. Whether you’re hiking Kilimanjaro or building up to walking three miles, find a training plan, a YouTube coach, or, even better, a buddy!
DIY it- Look around your house. What has been on your list for ages that you’ve never made time to do? Repainting your kitchen cabinets, reorganizing your bookshelves, figuring out what to do about the large pile of shoes on your closet floor (or is it just me?). Choose something, even if it’s small, and make a plan to get it done. Think about how accomplished you’ll feel every time you walk by your finished project.
Make a big craft- My summer project will be learning to sew. I have avoided it for too long and now it must be done. So I found a craft shop that teaches lessons for beginners! I can’t wait to add sewing to my crafting arsenal. Whether you’re a master knitter who still has that one item of clothing to conquer, or you’re a total crafting noob, maybe this summer you finally do it. Learn to embroider, crochet a dress, get really into woodworking! Crafting is so rewarding- I love making little hats so my cacti don’t get cold in winter, cross-stitching hilarious gifts for my friends, and soon I will be embroidering fun pictures on hats and jackets (another summer goal). So check out some YouTube vids, choose a craft, and get started!
These are just a few ideas, but a summer project is worth it. So what’s your project?
