Tomorrow is July 4th, aka my favorite holiday, aka the best day to cuddle up on the couch with snacks and a very patriotic marathon. Every year I spend the day watching John Adams, the truly excellent HBO series featuring Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney, and David Morse as the only man who should ever be allowed to play George Washington. If this is America’s last year (and it is), I will spend the 4th with Cheez Its and the Adams family.
If the greatest mini series about America ever made is not to your liking (I’m judging you), here are some other options:
Born on the Fourth of July- Yes, Tom Cruise is evil and crazy but damn this is a good movie. It’s depressing AF though so given where we are as a nation you may be really into that or not so much. If you’re feeling like a Scientology triple feature, throw in Top Gun and Maverick.
National Treasure- Obviously.
Hamilton- LMM’s best musical is and always will be Bring It On but Hamilton is his best musical about Alexander Hamilton.
A League of Their Own- Baseball! Madonna! Tom Hanks! Nothing more American than that.
The Sandlot- Because The Goonies will always be a sad, distant second place after the real best Millennial childhood movie.
Field of Dreams- Are you surprised that there are a lot of baseball movies on this list? Have you even been to America?
America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders- This new Netflix docuseries has everything America loves: football, cheerleaders, sexism, capitalism, exploitation of workers, and fat shaming. There’s probably a hot dog in there somewhere.
Jaws- The greatest movie ever made about why local elections matter.
Glory- I recommend this as a double feature with Lincoln.
All the Captain Americas- Or really any superhero movie. We did invent them, after all.
But really, just do yourself a favor and watch John Adams. You’re welcome.
Happy 4th. No matter what happens, this is our country, and we’ll keep fighting for it until the end.
