I am nothing if not late to a trend, so it should be no surprise that I didn’t discover the wealth of entertainment that is YouTube until this year. Before, the Tube was a place to figure out how to install my Tushy or do an at home yoga class. It never occurred to me that there was hours and hours of actually legitimately great content until very recently. The Queen Jenny Nicholson broke open the floodgates with her epic four hour review/takedown/eulogy of the ill-fated Star Wars hotel. From there I have discovered so many YouTubers who are making really fun, interesting, educational topics- from taking down MLMs to making the most hilarious videos about pitching terrible movies (I actually discovered this one years ago and it never gets old), and recently I have discovered that the kids are making travel shows!
Over the last few weeks I have watched a woman run a grueling ultramarathon, two Canadian guys take trains from the Arctic Circle to Morocco, and a man on an epic multi year odyssey riding his bike from Alaska to Argentina. These shows are funny, beautifully shot and edited, and would make Michael Palin and Anthony Bourdain proud. As a travel show obsessive, I am both shocked and impressed that it is even possible for these young people to make such high quality shows, often by themselves! Some of them are deeply serious and some, like two buddies eating at every Rainforest Cafe still in existence are absolutely ridiculous and completely worth every second of viewing.
Gen Z may not be great at the whole “having a job” thing but it turns out, they are really really good travel bloggers.
